From Cable Tie to Space-Defining Element

Cable ties and pipe fixings usually go unnoticed, but if taken as a constructional module alienated from their proper function, they can have a great design potential, as 52 students of the Academy of Arts in Munich have demonstrated. In more than 16,000 hours’ work, they wove, linked and lashed together 1.3 million of these polyamide strips for the exhibition “Two Hundred Years Academy of Arts”, creating a net-like spatial structure. In the process, they transformed the 200 m2 exhibition space in the Architectural Museum, Munich, into an amorphous landscape.
