Outstanding architecture not only meets high aesthetic criteria, but also fulfils its function – right down to the last detail. Only when aesthetics and technology combine to form a whole is exceptional architecture created. DETAIL's aim and raison d'être is to present these solutions to a wider audience.

Following the large International response to the 2005 and 2007 DETAIL Prize competitions and the success of the symposium at the BAU trade fair, DETAIL, in collaboration with the Bavarian Chamber of Architects and the Association of German Architects - Bavaria (BDA Bayern e.V.), will once again award the DETAIL Prize in 2009. Prizes are awarded to buildings that feature especially well-designed, groundbreaking and technically-innovative details within an outstanding overall design.

By choosing new categories, a greater emphasis will be placed on cross-sectoral connections and interdisciplinary networking. For the first time the DETAIL Prize will be expanded to include an industrial prize and an honorary prize.

The DETAIL Prize is awarded to innovative details incorporated into outstanding overall designs. The products should not only resolve technical problems but also, and more importantly, form a significant detail and play a decisive role in the overall design.

The DETAIL Industry Prize is aimed at manufacturers and developers of innovative building products and technical solutions, as well as at architects and engineers who have made use of these products. Entrants should show how their innovative products, integrated into the overall concept of a reference building, play a distinctive role and contribute to the success of the overall design.

 Jury
On 14 October a prestigious jury of seven members will nominate three projects of each category. The final prizes will be awarded during an architecture gala, which will be held during the BAU 2009 trade fair in a prominent building in the centre of Munich.

 Architecture Prize

Is it possible to hand in more than one project?
Yes, every office can hand in a maximum of three projects. Every project must be submitted on a separate plan, laminated on cardboard.

Is it possible to hand in projects that have alreday been submitted in DETAIL Prize 2007?
Yes, as long as the projects were completed after 1 January 2004, they are admitted again.

I am a student and would like to take part at DETAIL Prize 2009. Do students also need photos of the essential details or is it also allowed to submit renderings, drawings and photos of the model? Does the project have to be a building or can it also be a mobile market stall?
As student projects do not have to realised, of course you can take rederings, detail drawings and pictures of the model to show the essential detail. Project do not necessarily have to be buildings. It is also possible to submit mobile, flexible and temporary stuctures, as long as the detail plays a part in the overall design.

Is it possible to participate with footbridges? And if, in which category?
Yes, it is also possible to hand in bridges, landscape architecture and constructive engineering. You can either apply for the DETAIL Preis 2009 in general or, depending on the material of the bridge, for the Special Prize Wood or the Special Prize Innovation Steel.

Are there any forms of the declaration of consent of the owner and the photographer? Is it possible to write this declaration also in english?
The necessary declaration forms can be downloaded in english at www.detail.de/detailprize2009 ”Form and Author declaration”.

Is it necessary to register for participating on the Detail Prize 2009? Or do i just need to send the UNI A0 by the 14th of July?
It is not necessary to apply or register for the participation of DETAIL Prize 2009. Just submit the DIN A0-panels and the complete forms by 14 July 2008 to the Bavarian Chamber of Architects.

Is it really necessary to send the plans backed with card? This makes it difficult to post it from abroad. Is it also possible to submit the plans rolled or foalded?
As we use the original presentationsboard in addition to the jury meeting also for the exhibitions at the fair trade BAU2009, it is compulsory to hand in the plans backed with card. So far, we never had problems with transport from abroad. All projects of DETAIL Prizes 2005 and 2007 reached the Chamber of Architects without any damage.
In case of some countries, like switzerland, it might be necessary to pay custom charges.

Is it allowed to place the name of the architecture office on the plans? As the buildings are realisied, it is easy to find out the corresponding office anyway.
DETAIL Prize is not a anonymous competition. It is rather an award, which means that author, architecture office and informations about the project can be mentioned.

What is happening after the DETAIL Prize 2009-proceduce regarding publishing, foto reportage etc. in case a project wins a prize? I am asking because we want to enter a project whose owners want to be as anonymous as possibe.
After winning DETAIL Prize 2009 or one of the Special Prizes, the project will be published in german and english DETAIL magazine. In case of winning one of the Special Prizes, the sponsor of the category might use the project for online or print publications, always mention it in the context of the competition. The presentation boards will be shown on exhibitions at the trade fair BAU 2009, the award ceremony and might be shown in architecture museums and institutes afterwards. Actually, the owner should be mentioned on these presentation boards. Nevertheless you can hand in the project, just note that the owner does not want to be named.

But, it is compulsory, for our own documentation, to have the owners permission and signature to use and publish pictures of the building. In case the owner wants to be anonymous, we will not mention the name in our publications.

Regarding the building qualities for the basic category (innovative details) as well as the ArchitekturXport category, could you please be so kind to let us know whether we should prepare an A 0 panel for each category or one panel for both?
You only need to submit the project once –always for the special prize category. In this case, please hand it in for the category ArchitekturXport, all projects will take part at the main prize anyway; independent of the material and the category.
Please consider, that nevertheless, you have to hand in two copies of the presentation board anyway.

When sending goods out of the EU there will be custom charges. Do these fees have to be paid by the sender or the receiver?
If you are sending goods out of the European Union (EU) you will need to prepare a Customs Invoice. There will also be custom charges, that, if the sender did not pay in advance, have to be paid by the reciever. DETAIL will bring these fees to account and send a bill to the sender. Therefore we kindly ask to pay these custom fees in advance!

How can I hand in the presentation boards? Will there be anybody at the weekends to accept the parcels?
You can either post the presentation boards or hand them in personally.
The address is: Bayerische Architectskammer, Referat für Wettbewerb und Vergabe, Herr Dipl.Ing. Oliver Voitl, Haus der Architektur, Waisenhausstraße 4, D - 80637 Munich, GERMANY.
Office hours are: Monday till Thursday 8.00 am – 4.00 pm, Friday 8.00 am – 3.00 pm, weekend and bank holiday closed.

Are the shortlist/winning designs of the Award exhibited, and if so, is this a touring show?
There will be two exhitions of the nominated/ winning projects in Januay 2009 in Munich, one at the trade fair BAU 2009 and the other will be shown in the city centre during the award ceremony. We also plan further exhibitions of the projects at architecture museums or galeries, but have no concrete places and dates yet. As soon, as there are any dates fixed, we will publish them online.

Are there any entry frees for the architecture prize?
No, there are no fees for the DETAIL Architecture Prize 2009.

Our firm is located in Australia and as such will take longer to arrive in Munich. Does the 14th July submission deadline apply to the arrival date of the boards in Munich, or do submissions postmarked before the 14th of July count also?
The arrival date of the DETAIL Prize 2009 boards is irrelevant, as long as the pacel is postmarked before the 14th of July. We will not start with the preliminary examination before the beginning of August to make sure that all projects from around the world have arrived.

I am a recently graduated student and my final year project might be of interest to the judging panel. Can I enter it in for the student special prize – the design was never constructed?
Yes, if the project was designed while you were still a student, you can submit it to DETAIL Special Prize for students.

We would like to know what do you mean with "brief description" in the entry form. What kind of information do you want in this box?
It is up to you which kind of information you give as a “brief description”. Important is, that the jury gets an idea of the project. Ideally it is a short summary of the most important parts of the project.

We would like to know how to fill the consent of photographer, consent of owners, and the consent of architects boxes.
With a signature in these boxes the photographer, the owner and the architect confirm the terms of the announcement text.

Would you please clarify the size requirements for the submittal for the DETAIL competition? Unfortunately here in the US we're not exactly sure what size the "1 DIN A0' size refers to.
The standard DIN A 0 size means 841 x 1189 mm paper size, which is about 33,1 x 46,81 Inch.

The building our firm is entering is a public building - as such there is no such "owner". The Chief Executive of the company that is in charge of the building is happy to sign - should we change the wording or is the signature under the old wording enough?
Maybe you can change the word “owner” to “Chief Executive”, just to avoid any misunderstandings. Then the signature of the Chief Executive of the company should be enough.

Do students also have to submit an A0 presentation panel of their unbuilt project, or can it be sent as a digital file?
To take part in DETAIL Prize 2009 everyone has to submit the AO panel, as we need them for the jury meeting and the exhibitions.

We would like to submit two projects that both do not fit to any of the special prize categories. Do we have to state a special prize category?
No, all projects automatically take part in the main prize. If none of the special prizes is interesting for you, please hand in your project for the main prize.

Can you please explain what the backing ‘laminated cardboard’ is? Can it be foamcore or does it have to be cardboard?
Please use any material you want for the backing. It is only important to have a robust panel, so that we can use the original boards for the jury meeting and the exhibitions. A foamcore-backing is all right.

We shall send you our candidation for the project we are authors both of architectural design and civil engineeing (structural) design. The thing is that we would also like to candidate the project we are authors of the major structural design (civil engineering), and some other company made architectural design. Is it possible to apply in such form?
In general, structural engineers are allowed to take part in DETAIL Prize 2009, as long as the engineer is also involved in the design of the project. If the part of your office was mostly impleneting the design of the architctural office, you can hand it in as working group. In case of submitting your projects, please state which role your office had for the project. The jury will then decide during the jury meeting if the project will be entitled.

The documents and the A0, can have the stamp from the post with the date 14 July 2008? Or the project must in Munchen by 14 July, 4pm?
Important is only the postmark dated 14 July 2008 or before. It doesn´t matter when the panel will reach Munich. We will wait with the preliminary examination at least three more weeks until the beginning of August to make sure all projects have reached Munich by that time.

If a building is made of concrete blocks, which special prize category does it belong to?
If none of the Special Prizes fits to your project, please hand it in for the main prize, that is independent of the material.

As student projects are not realized, do students also have to fill in all the declaration forms?
Yes, please fill in all forms nevertheless and just leave away the fields that do not make sense, like owner´s and photographer´s declaration etc.

Are “Architctural technicians” entitled to take part in DETAIL Prize 2009?
If as an architectural technician you have the authorization to present building documents you are also entitled to take part in DETAIL Prize 2009.

Do ALL the photos that appear on the DIN A0 should be attached on the CD, or just the essential detail photos.
We need the digital pictures on CD in case we would like to publish your project. Therefore we do not need all pictures, but all pictures you would like to have published in case your project will be on the shortlist.

There is too long dinstances and holiday season to reach the photographer and the owner in order and in time. That's why we would rather ask them to send us their consents in free form by mail or fax. That we could attach the consents to the entry form, if it's possible.
Yes, you can do it that way. It is not important to have all signatures on one form. As long as all necessary persons state with their signatures that DETAIL is allowed to publish the project, everything is allright.

Can drawings be at a scale outside of the 1:500 / 1:1 range? It is important for use to show the context in which the project sits and at 1:500, the site plan is much too large.
As every project is different, it is up to you which scale you choose. If the surrounding of the building is very important for the project, you can also use another scale, or just show a part of the surrounding area. In the end, it is only important, that the jury can understand the project only with the information given on the A0-panel.

We would like to submit a building that was realized by a student group and the professor. Can be take part in the student prize with this project?
There is no standard for this case, as usually there are no realized buildings in the student category. If you want to submit the project, can you please attach an exlanation which part the students and which part the professor were having. The jury will then decide if the project is allowed for the student category or not.

What do you mean about "author's declaration"?
There are two forms that have to be filled in to take part in DETAIL Prize 2009 – the “Autors´s declaration Form” and the “DETAIL Prize 2009 – Entry Form”. You can find both forms for download at www.detail.de/detailprize2009.

We have both architects and engineers on our design team for the project we are looking to submit. For “proof that participant is entitled to practice the profession of architect or engineer” do we need proof for all, or just for one member of the team, or for one architect and one engineer?
In the event of working groups, each participant must proof his/her professional entitlement indivdually (3. Conditions of participation).

Does the competition entry for students have to be limited to projects that were done as school work?
Projects for the special student prize have to be designed by students. That does not automatically mean that these projects have to be done as school work. Projects can also be competitions, theses, individual projects...

In the guideline 2009, you say that we should submit DIN A0 sheet (two copies). Does it mean that we should submit 1 A0 sheet with 2 copies, totally 3 same A0 sheets?
Please lay out one presentation board of your project and post two copies of it, as we will have two exhibitions of the projects at the same time. So, all in all it is two same AO presentation boards.

Regarding a proof that the participant is entitled to practice the profession of architect or engineering – is it ok to give you this statement in written form signed by the architects/engineer and to enlose the copy of official document given by Croatian Chamber of Architects and Civil Engineers?
Please send a copy of the official document of the Chamber of Architects or Enginees as proof of entitlement.

Could you tell me what is meant by 'promoter' please?
With "promoter" in chapter “4. Submittal requirements” is meant the owner of the building.

Can you please clarify whether you need each image/drawing on the A0 boards to be submitted as individual A4 sheets or whether you mean a reduced version of the A0 board?
Please send the A0 presentation board reduced to A4.

In terms of the “Special Category Prize”, are we restricted to one category or can we enter into two?
You can state as many special prize categories as you want. Nevertheless, please just submit your project once (one A0 presentation board, two same copies). We will consider the project in all stated special prize categories.

I just noticed that the format is to be upright A0. Does this mean portrait format? i.e. the width is shorter than the length.
Yes, that is right. The format is A0 upright = portrait format (841 mm width x 1189 mm hight).

In entry form, Partner offices/specialist planners/assistants – does it means you need names of our subcontarctors (other offices ) or associates within our offices who also worked on this project?
Yes. In case anybody else involved in the project should be named when we publish your project, you can fill in the company names in the field “Partner offices/specialist planners/assistants”. If you made everything yourself and you do not want to name anybody else, that´s also all right...

Date of scheme – means date when design was finished or entire construction?
One of the conditions of entry is that your project was built to completion after 1 January 2004. So in this field please state when the entire construction was finished.

 Industry Prize

Are architecture offices admitted to take part in the Industry Prize? And is it possible to submit three projects for the Architecture Prize and three projects for the Industry prize or is it three projects together?
Every office is allowed to take part in the Architecture Prize with three projects and in the Industry Prize with three products. For every project/product you have to hand in a separate panel and the complete documents.
