Thanks to changing general conditions and increasing environmental awareness, the size of timber constructions being built, also in an urban context, is getting bigger. DETAIL presents a broad range of modern timber constructions.

Architecture and landscape are connected in many different ways. Buildings can blend almost invisibly into the surrounding landscape or they can deliberately enhance and accentuate it.

Truly massive, monolithic buildings are becoming something of an object of the past; heat insulation and energy saving regulations have long ensured that multi-layered, insulated wall constructions are now the norm. From the outside, however, these facades do not necessarily appear any less monolithic, as the examples in the next edition demonstrate. The range of materials used covers a broad spectrum, from exposed concrete and brickwork, to thermal insulation composite systems or natural stone.

Schemes from around the globe show in detail just how attractive these worlds can be, as well as illustrating the form of construction and materials.

And that's not surprising when you consider that glass elements or glazed openings dictate how daylight enters and affects a building's interior. This magazine includes examples of architecturally successful uses of glass alongside articles about the technology used to bend or fix it.

How light and space concepts come together in impressive ways is shown in the sanctuary in the parish centre of St. Nikolaus near Munich, in the archeological museum in Vitoria, or in the new Alice Tully Hall in New York.

"Small-scale Housing" seem to contradict the current ambition to build sustainably, at first glance. Only after more storeys and larger communities that are closer together with the common usage of infrastructure and the realisation of an ecological concept can energy and surface usage be minimised. In the current edition of DETAIL, the lead article demonstrates the most important aspects of sustainable housing developments.

Concrete Construction is various in the building's utilisation, it's surface design, or the technology which it is built with. The buildings in the new magazine mirror this diversity, e. g. the childrens' playhouse near Paris with green coloured, structured exposed concrete by ECDM. Further examples are the system building constructions by Claus en Kaan Architecten, who are at the beginning of rising a new quarter in Amsterdam, and the concrete bearing structure for a administration building in London by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.
