The development of 212 houses and 166 apartments, arranged in three dense groups, is set on a 9.5 hectare site within public landscaped gardens. In order to „create a new relationship between private and public external space“ the architects included interior rooftop spaces, internal courtyards and semi-public community gardens into the design.
The other shortlisted contenders were the Royal Festival Hall by Allies and Morrison, Westminster Academy by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, Manchester Civil Justice Centre by Denton Corker Marshall, Bijlmer Arena Station by Grimshaw and Arcadis and Nordpark Cable Railway by Zaha Hadid Architects.
