More Airport Than Railway Station

South Station in Beijing by Terry Farrell and Partners
At present Beijing has three railway stations in operation – one in the east and one in the west. The new station in southern Beijing will manage trains shuttling between the capital city and neighboring Tianjin on China's first 300 km/h high-speed rail.

South Station in Beijing by Terry Farrell and PartnersWith the commencement of the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway, the new Beijing South Railway Station began its official operations on August 1, 2008. The Beijing south railway station is of giant proportions, built over 940 000sqm the roof alone is the size of 20 football pitches. Designed by Terry Farrell and Partners, the dome shape building consists of 24 platforms and is bigger than the bird nest olympic stadium. Trains arriving and departing from the station will be able to reach speeds up to approximately 560km per hour.
What’s To Come: Subway Connections.
Beijing South is getting a massive Subway system linkage in just around 4 years’ time. Coming next September (2009) is the new Subway Line 4, which links the station to central Beijing at Xuanwumen and the Xidan shopping area.
Three years after that, it’s time to get ready for the arrival of Subway Line 14, a west-east connection which is more for out-of-central-Beijing passengers and those headed for the CBD.
