Henning Larsen Architects won the international, open competition for Uppsala Concert and Congress Hall, among 134 proposals from all over the world. The concert hall consists of a detached, sculpturally designed building that, with its reflecting titanium facades, appears as a large, split crystal. The slots give the impression of rays of light opening up and revealing the inner perceptual spatiality of the volume. The building is cut vertically to give access from two sides and horizontally to give a panoramic view of the city. Both through the vertical and horizontal cut, it is possible to experience Uppsala’s most important historical buildings. In this way, the new Uppsala Concert Hall compliments and enters into the characteristic and historic context of the city. Uppsala Concert and Congress Hall contains a large, flexible banquet and exhibition area, a concert hall for symphonic music performances with 1,250 seats and two smaller halls.
The Uppsala Concert and Congress Hall is divided into three major public functions. At entrance level it has a banquet and exhibition hall (800 m2) including a café, and on level 2 a conference and concert hall seating 350 people as well as a smaller hall seating 100 people are located. The key room of the building – the large concert hall seating 1,125 – is located on level 5 with views over the rooftops of the city. The concert hall will get sublime acoustics and room for large orchestras, dance performances or congresses. The design of the concert and congress hall is perceived as a metal clad crystalline monolith. A monolith split vertically to provide access from two sides and horizontally to offer panoramic views from the foyer of the main hall over the other distinctive monumental works of the city.
