In connection with Foster + Partners’ project to remodel and extend the "Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus", the Lenbachhaus Museum in Munich is hosting the exhibition „Foster + Partners: Working with history“. It will introduce the new design for the museum and explore a number of related works, which address the theme of working with history.
The design scheme for the museum reveals an addition to Franz von Lenbach's historic villa. A new entrance and an opening towards the Propylees and adjacent Königsplatz emphasize the museum's relationship with the city, while the new Atrium space will showcase the museum’s celebrated collection.
The exhibition further explores a number of related works, which demonstrate how new architecture can be the catalyst for the revitalisation of old buildings, including the New German Parliament at the Reichstag in Berlin; the Carre d’Art in Nimes, the Sackler Galleries at the Royal Academy of Arts in London or the recently completed courtyard of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.
