25th – 26th October: RIBA International Conference in Barcelona

During a two day conference titled „Architecture and Identity“ questions concerning the globalisation of architecture and the coherent issue of architectural identity will be discussed in the Hesperia Tower in Barcelona.

The RIBA Conference offers a programme encouraging speakers and delegates to meet and exchange views on the issues surrounding the identity of international, national and local architecture. Guest speakers include Herman Hertzberger, who will explore the impact of globalisation on local heritage sites, Joseph Rykwert from the University of Pennsylvania illustrating how local and international architecture are influenced by history or Ken Yeang, who will be discussing how environmental and ecological concerns could trigger a more regionalist architecture.

Also stimulating debate will be Louisa Hutton’s approach on identity in architecture, Jürgen Mayer’s question whether a European architecture can be exported as a „brand“ to the rest of the world and Alejandro Zaera Polo’s discussion on global culture and architecture. In the afternoons, architectural tours of the city will give the delegates an insight into the identity and heritage of Barcelona.
