Probably the world´s tallest timber-framed residential building was completed in recent months in the suburb of Hackney, in East London. Stadthaus, part of the Murray Grove Housing Development, stands 29.75 metres high. Apart from the plinth, which is of reinforced concrete, the entire building, including the two lift shafts and stairwells, was built of laminated plywood.

Apartment Building in London

This terraced building is situated in London’s prestigious Bayswater/Notting Hill area. It fills a gap which was left by a bomb in the 1940 Blitz, and was reputedly the last such site. In the 1980s an initial project was approved, but when the economy weakened it was put on hold. A new phase began in 1996, attended by a new design for a load-bearing masonry structure accommodating three two-storey units. In late 2002, two years after the plans were approved by building authorities, a team of select firms was ready to begin work.

Zaha Hadid Architecture + Design

Zaha Hadid won the Pritzer Prize in 2004, when she had only just completed her first substantial project, the Rosenthal Centre for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati. Now she is busy working on projects that range from masterplans in Singapore and Istanbul, to an opera house in China, a museum in Rome, and a skyscraper in Dubai. Phaeno Science Centre, for which she was shortlisted for the 2006 RIBA Stirling Prize. Both have triumphantly demonstrated her ability to translate the essence of her virtuoso spatial invention in solid form.
