Design for a Living World: New potential for unusual materials
Sustainable product design and a hint of the exotic are combined in the new exhibition entitled "Design for a Living World" in the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum in New York. Ten internationally known designers were asked by the curators to develop some thoughts on unusual materials and the places from where they originate.
Anyone who has seen the Glass Pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio may be able to guess that the design for this new boutique, too, is the work of SANAA’s Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa.
The new concept for the official NYC Information Center in Midtown Manhattan by WXY architecture + urban design enables users to create custom guidebooks and itineraries, eliminating the need for print brochures. DETAIL.de shows pictures of the new visitors’ centre.

The historic library by John Carrère and Thomas Hastings at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street opened in 1911 as a symbol of the City’s commitment to culture and knowledge. Zaha Hadid in New York
Zaha Hadid has created a series of sculptural installations for a two-venue New York exhibition, opening on November 1st 2008. According to Kenny Schachter, the curator of the show, each installation offers elements of various architectural projects Hadid has been working on. They will be on display at Sonnabend Gallery and 168 10th Avenue until December 13th.

Construction Begins On Herzog & De Meuron’s High-Rise
Construction begins in New York City on the first high-rise tower of Herzog & de Meuron. The building at 56 Leonard Street will be a 57-story residential building at the intersection of Church Street and Leonard Street in the Tribeca Historic District of downtown Manhattan, where it will rise above historic 19th century neighbours.

A courthouse that promotes openness
The Bronx County Hall of Justice in New York has finally been completed and opened early this year. The design by Rafael Viñoly Architects, that took 15 years to be fulfilled, is trying to signify the openness of the judicial system by implementing transparent material.
For SANAA the challenge was to reconcile the client’s spatial requirements and New York’s building code on a site just over 20 metres in width, wedged in between the neighbouring buildings. These considerations called for a vertical building and led to the concept of stacked boxes.
