Sauna in Finland

documentation    p. 28 - 30
Architect Keppo, Jaakko |

Situated on a lake in the middle of a forest, this 20 m2 structure comprises a sauna, a covered outdoor terrace and a rest room. It was the outcome of a student competition on the subject of timber as a building material. In addition to its cultural and economic significance in Finland, the material offers an opportunity to test various forms of construction to full scale. Apart from aesthetic considerations, the criteria for the design were durability, ecological quality and suitability for industrial prefabrication. An innovative use of native timbers was also required.
