Pair of Houses in Bregenz

documentation    p. 323 - 326
Architect Unterrainer, Walter | Specialist Planner Ritter, Gerhard | Structural Engineer Gehrer, Ingo |

This low-energy, ecological development has a prefabricated timber structure that was erected in two days. Each house has a floor area of roughly 130 m2. On the north side, which is conventionally insulated, are two low ancillary buildings accommodating garages, cycle spaces and the entrance area. The construction of the east and west faces consists of a skin of wired cast glass with a ventilated cavity and a cellular paper-based layer to the rear. The air in the cells remains roughly at room temperature. It is not a source of heat, but serves as a buffer to prevent heat loss from the interior. As a result, no sunscreening is necessary to these faces. The south face is fully glazed and has solar collectors at the top for the hot water supply.
