House in Amersfoort, Netherlands

documentation    p. 716 - 718
Architect Krom, Aad | UNStudio | Structural Engineer Bureau Bouwpartners |

The form of this grey sand-limestone brick house is hardly evident from the road. The roof surfaces rise gently from street level, while the garage access ramp and the path to the concealed entrance slope down. The house grows from the topography of the ground, in a sense, allowing the inner realm to be screened off from the outside world. The roof surfaces and the limited outdoor spaces are uniformly covered with a layer of coarse crushed stone and are scarcely differentiated from their surroundings. Despite the restricted site area, the actual footprint of the building was extended as far as possible, since the client has a dislike for gardening. The sole planting is a grove of trees, laid out to a grid-like pattern.
