Housing Development in Lauterach-Unterfeld, Austria

documentation    p. 719 - 722
Architect ARGE Baumschlager-Eberle | Structural Engineer Mader, Ernst |

The development is located on a park-like site between a railway line and an area of single-family housing. Laid out in the form of five three-storey blocks that follow the line of the railway, the new development creates a clear urban edge and lends a new definition to the random surrounding settlement pattern. At the same time, the orientation of the blocks allows views through from one side to the other. The flat roofs are cantilevered out at the edges to reduce the weathering of the façades. Since dust and dirt are also to be expected next to the railway line, the façades were painted with a colour finish so that soiling would not be immediately evident. The thin, smooth prefabricated roof elements appear to float above the volumes of the buildings, a phenomenon that helps the two parts to retain their own individual character.
