Theatre Extension in Vidy-Lausanne, Switzerland

documentation    p. 370 - 372
Architect Luscher, Rodolphe | Structural Engineer B.E.G. (Schmidt und Partner) | Bezençon und Freimüller |

Additional rehearsal space for this theatre was created in a new structure raised above a parking area. The extension is linked to the existing building by a walkway and by a glazed staircase tower that serves both parts of the complex. Based on the modular steel structural system of the existing building designed by Max Bill in 1964, the extension is raised on four columns that support a
twolayer steel girder structure. The north and south faces are fully glazed. The roof is also in a two-layer form of construction, the lighter upper layer of which is cantilevered out on one edge. The extension seems to hover above the ground and establish a reciprocal relationship between indoor and outdoor space.
