Unobtrusively, but in their own distinct way, these 14 small kiosks of glass, copper and stainless steel stand in a row on the pavement along the medieval walls of the city. The scheme forms the first stage of a programme to upgrade and enliven the entire ring of walls without affecting their historical character. At night, the light from the glass lanterns at the tips of the kiosks echoes the rhythm of the crenellations. The kiosks have a variable form: pyramidal in shape when closed, they can be transformed into umbrella-like objects with sales stands beneath by folding up the outer panels. The primary beam structure is braced by cross-members in the plinth and by the sheet copper panels forming the skin.
