Cultural Centre in Flims

documentation    p. 1240 - 1244
Architect Olgiati, Valerio | Structural Engineer Conzett Bronzini Gartmann AG |

Reworked to create an urban focus for the village and used for various cultural purposes, this whitewashed cube now resembles a built manifesto. The entrance was moved from the busy street front to one side with a forecourt approach. The concrete ring beam round the edge of the roof and the surrounds to the windows, together with the uniform white coloration of the building, accentuate the rough texture of the walls and roof and the three-dimensional quality of the openings. The house was completely gutted. The new larch beam floors are supported by an internal timber-stud lining to the existing walls. Internally, the rooms are articulated by a massive, asymmetrically positioned column that rises on the rake in the attic storey to the crest of the roof.
