Experience Music Project in Seattle

report    p. 1197
Architect Gehry, Frank O. |

Frank O. Gehry was commissioned to design this museum for rock culture and rock history. The building is articulated into six elements withdifferent coloured surfaces.
A steel mesh was drawn over the steel structures of the individual volumes and covered with a layer of gunned concrete. This, in turn, was clad with stainless-steel and painted aluminium shingles. The 21,000 metal sheets in various shapes and colours form a series of shimmering surfaces that accentuate the sculptural quality of the buildings. Internally, the free forms result in exciting sequences of spaces linked by stairs, bridges and ramps.
The development houses a musical theatre as well as exhibition spaces.
