Muche-Schlemmer House in Dessau

report    p. 1229
Architect Gropius, Walter |

Walter Gropius’s Muche-Schlemmer House, built in Dessau in 1927, has now been refurbished and was reopened in March 2002. After a long debate as to whether it should be restored to its original state or left with the changes it underwent in 1939, it was decided to restore the original outer architectural form, while leaving many of the marks of time and internal changes. The patina was retained, in other words, the original rendering, the surviving windows, doors and ironmongery, as well as the linoleum flooring, all of which were renovated. Schlemmer’s living room is in its old De Stijl colours of blue, yellow and red, while the bedroom of the Muche house is entirely in black, as the Bauhaus teacher knew it.
