Regional Library of Saxony - State and university libraries in Dresden

Not yet officially inaugurated, this new library, built to house the media resources of Dresden’s state and university libraries, was opened for use on a limited basis in July. The slim cubes of the library blend well with the surroundings, and from the street are almost hidden behind the spreading trees. The library is arranged compactly on the three subterranean levels, reached from the street via a cutting in the earth rampart. Visitors arrive at the top level of the library, the view from here facilitating rapid orientation. The heart of the design is the central, three-floor reading room with desks for 200 people and daylighting from above. Around the sides are the open shelves, magazine resources and extra work space. The place has the feel of a traditional, comfortable library, with subdued artificial lighting, dark furniture and fittings, and leather chairs.
