Inserted in the existing linear development of the university, this complex was realized in two stages. Initially, the western section functioned as an independent entity. Five years after its erection, a similar but somewhat smaller structure was added at a distance of 13 m. Narrow conservatory spaces along the north and south facades on the upper floors unite the complex into a single volume. Three enclosed bridges also link the two tracts across the intermediate courtyard. The transparent facades open the building to the campus and the further surroundings, so that teaching takes place against a background of the
“hautes montagnes”. The views in and out are filtered by the plants in the conservatories – bougainvillea on the south side and various types of bamboo along the north face. As a result, the internal spaces have different qualities, depending on their aspect. The watering of the plants and the heating and ventilation of the conservatory spaces are regulated automatically. The building has a simple precast concrete structure, with internal finishings reduced to essentials. Elaborate details were rejected in favour of greater spatial and lighting quality. These planning economies made it possible to create additional teaching areas and more generous internal spaces. The restrained construction is offset by the colours of the plants in the conservatories, which give rise to a surprisingly poetical atmosphere.
