Built for the production and storage of honey, this working cabin in the US was inspired by the form of a honeycomb. The structure consists of a prefabricated steel frame with tongued-and-grooved wood cladding. The building is roughly 2.45 ? 7.30m on plan and is raised above the ground on foundation strips to protect the honey from vermin. Integrated in the facade is a steel-and-glass display system that functions as a load-bearing outer wall, a showcase and light filter. Internally, the facade can appear transparent, translucent or opaque, depending on the time of day and the season. A patina of rust was allowed to develop on the exposed steel before it was treated with a transparent seal.
