Principal`s Offices at the New University of Lisbon

documentation    p. 1284 - 1287
Architect Aires Mateus e Associados | Structural Engineer Villar, Miguel |

Functionally, the university rectorate buildings in Lisbon are divided into two realms. The administration is housed in a tall, narrow structure. The larger spaces, such as the foyer and lecture halls, are located to one side in a plinth zone, which forms an extensive plateau with a monumental open staircase. The top of the plinth and the long faces of the administration tract are finished with sandstone slabs. The free arrangement of horizontal window slits over the facade masks the storey divisions of the building, while the recessed, glazed end faces lend the stone envelope the appearance of a thin skin.
