The small Austrian state of Vorarlberg has acquired a reputation among architects for the high quality of its buildings. A number of pioneering schemes also exist there in the field of energy-efficient construction. These include the secondary school in Klaus, which was designed as a passive-energy structure. Consisting entirely of prefabricated timber elements (with the exception of the staircase cores), the building is a pilot scheme in the field of school construction. The clearly articulated three-storey main volume and the two-storey linking tract to the existing sports hall screen the tree-lined playground from the road.
