Sainsbury’s Supermarket in Greenwich
typology p. 174 - 175Architect Chetwood Associates | Structural Engineer WSP Consulting Engineers |
Facades banked up with earth provide natural insulation and open only to allow access to a broad, glazed entrance. The sales space of this round structure is naturally illuminated via large north-light roof strips. The daylight that enters from above is reflected back again by the white speckled terrazzo flooring.
Solar panels and wind turbines generate lighting energy. Thanks to the overall concept, the energy needs are only half those for a comparable supermarket in a conventional form of construction.
