In order to impinge as little as possible on this listed structure and not to waste valuable exhibition space, the lift was erected on the pavement outside the museum, with a covered entrance zone between the shaft and the existing facade. A new access opening was formed on every floor. The use of lighting and lettering over the full height of the lift creates a special visual attraction, while screening the lift car and the structure from view. At night, the signs are illuminated by external floodlights with coloured filters, evoking a range of different moods. In collaboration with the structural engineers, the load-bearing members were kept as slender as possible. The lift tower is rigidly fixed to the existing building.
