House in London

documentation    p. 1149 - 1152

Over the years, various rear extensions had been added to this listed 18th-century house in Belgravia, London. These have now been transformed into a bright, spacious sequence of rooms for common use. The elevated central section of the roof over the new kitchen and dining area is covered with double glazing. White, translucent thermal insulation in the cavity between the layers of glass reduces thermal gains and losses, while allowing a maximum of diffuse light to enter. The white coloration also reflects conservation requirements. Like the roofs over the living area and the pool, the transparent glazed strips on both sides of the raised roof light allow the ingress of more daylight as well as affording a glimpse of the sky and conditions outdoors.
