Mobile Artist's Studio in Utrecht

documentation    p. 1466 - 1469
Architect Kahl, Christian | Korteknie Stuhlmacher Architecten | BikvanderPol |

Set in one of the largest new housing developments in the Netherlands, studio no.19 provides accommodation for international “artists in residence” and can also be used for spontaneous cultural events. Designed to be moved as a whole and erected in other locations, the box, with a timber structure, was reinforced with steel members. Despite the concept of mobility, the architects wished to achieve a high degree of spatial quality and good daylighting conditions. Once the pivoting facade elements have been opened, the seemingly introverted studio house assumes a different character. Folded down, the timber panels form platforms on which the artists can present themselves and their work to the city.
