Creating workspace without sacrificing living space was the challenge in the small apartment of a Manhattan graphic designer. The answer was to replace the partition separating living and sleeping areas with a 4-m long, 2.5-m high “box” that converts into workspace. An angled opening in the unit provides a visual link between the two areas, and small tables fold out beside the bed. In just a few simple moves, the lounge can be transformed into an office. A low padded bench (sofa-cum-guest bed) used in “lounge mode” is moved aside and hidden behind the opened folding door of the wooden unit. A second full-sized workspace is provided by the dining table, which slides to one side on a rail along the wall.
