In view of the progressive digitali-zation of media, information and knowledge seem increasingly to assume the quality of commodities. The scope for traditional, non-commercial libraries would appear to be question-able, therefore. The author presents two examples: the Central Library in Seattle and the university library in Eberswalde, each of which, in its own way, reveals the changes that have taken place in the consumption of information – the one as a realm for new experiences, the other in its resistance to programmatic innovation.
