The Omotesando in Tokyo has acquired a cult status as a boulevard where leading fashion houses have their flagship stores – some like striking palazzi – designed by top architects. Land prices and building laws leave little alternative to a maximum exploitation of the sites. The facade, therefore, acquires a special significance in communicating the image of a certain label here. A whole series of exceptional building enclosures has been created in close proximity to each other, rather like a small open-air exhibition. The spectrum presented here demonstrates what is possible with a large degree of design freedom and a generous budget.
