Ecumenical Chapel in Turku

Like a giant copper-scaled fish this chapel rests on top of a hill on the Finnish island of Hirvensalo. Its shape is a symbol of the early days of Christianity. As well as religious services, art exhibitions are also held in the chapel. Wooden surfaces and an exciting contrast between light and shade is the dominant impression in the nave, an effect that heightens towards the altar which is lit by an arch of translucent glass stretching from floor to ridge. Uplighters at the foot of the load--bearing “ribs” of glulam pine lend additional drama. A skylight provides illumination for the small foyer. Gradually the copper cladding will take on a green patina, blending the chapel into its wooded surroundings.
