In countries such as Japan, light-weight steel construction is widely used. In Germany, however, is has yet to find much resonance. The author provides an overview of this construction technique and discusses its possibilities for building extensions and renovations. The constructional, load-bearing and technical advantages and disadvantages of light-weight steel construction are addressed.
