This colourful new school on the outskirts of Berlin is distinguished by its clear forms and functional interior. The concrete cross-wall construction is left exposed wherever possible, while the facade consists of a variety of sheet-metal and glass panels. At the heart of the development is a courtyard playground and a raised terrace flanked by two L-shaped classroom tracts. Sunk in the ground beneath the terrace are the sports and assembly halls, which are daylighted from above. The lively roofscape, accommodating clerestory strips to daylight the spaces below, links all sections of the development, while two periscopes with mirrors bring light into the corridor beneath and allow visual contact between levels.
