Weekend House at St. Andrew's Beach

documentation    p. 806 - 809
Architect Godsell, Sean |

This elevated weekend retreat offers superb views over the ocean and a chance to reconnect with nature, beyond the controlled working environment in the city. The transparent building skin, made of pre-oxidised steel grating, merely provides shade for the two separate cells on the deck within. Occupants moving from room to room are exposed to the elements. The steel skeleton is supported on two pairs of columns and secondary girders. Diffuse light penetrates the living area through the corrugated GRP roof lined with translucent thermal insulation. Glass doors open onto the veranda. The rust brown of the steel and the wood creates a homogeneous impression.
