One World - One Dream? New Buildings for the New China

discussion    p. 734 - 739
Author Kaltenbach, Frank |

No other host nation for the Olympic Games has been able to transform itself as radically as China has within the last 15 years. Construction and infrastructure have simply exploded in numerous cities – Beijing, of course, is a case in point. As principal host city of the 2008 Olympic Games, it is the location of the majority of the spectacular and sophisticated constructions designed for the event – albeit predominantly by western architects; Airport Terminal 3 by Norman Foster, the CCTV Tower by OMA, the swimming stadium Watercube by PTW and the National Stadium »Bird's Nest« designed by Herzog and de Meuron.
Have these architects been able to set their distinctive marks on the country without being misused by the propaganda machinery of the military dictatorship?
