Raising the blocks above the ground was an experiment on the part of the developer, when one considers that this is publicly assisted housing. The clients wished to create new dwelling forms in which different families could live together. Two separate volumes with two single-storey and two maisonette dwellings are linked on a raised timber platform to form a single entity. The timber deck, connected to the public realm by a ramp, was not designed as an access area, but as a communal outdoor living space and as a closing element over the stores and car-parking areas below.
Creating the housing in a timber form of construction was a response to the environmental, garden-city concept underlying this part of Reims. Initially sceptical about the use of this material, the client was ultimately prepared to make all kinds of experiments, including cladding the facade with cedar boarding with flame-treated outer surfaces. This results in permanent changes to the surface and a varied appearance that is subject to different weathering effects.
