Nine clients joined forces with a developer to implement their own concepts of living on the site of a former barracks. Despite the conventional terraced-house dimensions, the layouts are quite individual. The structure – a timber skeleton-frame without load-bearing walls – and the restrained facade with a high degree of transparency were specified by the architects. The individual layouts and the use of materials, however, were freely determinable. The houses are occupied mostly by families with children, although one is shared by a group of students. All the dwellings are based on an ecologically and economically efficient concept that complies with passive-energy standards, with a central-heating system fuelled by wood pellets, a solar-energy plant and a biologically sound form of construction. The generous areas of glazing, especially over the internal staircases, help to avoid the sense of constriction common to terraced-house types. On the south face, the lower ground floor rooms are also glazed over their full width. These spaces enjoy good daylighting and direct access to the garden, so that they can also be used for living purposes.
