On a hill near Burnley in Lancashire, a musical sculpture – the “Singing, Ringing Tree” – has been erected. A stone hut that formerly stood here was partly demolished and filled to form the foundation for the sculpture. The “tree” itself, consisting of a stack of steel tubes, was fabricated in London. The weight of each layer is transmitted via a steel ring to the layer below. Each layer is rotated about the axis by 15° from the next, creating not only a dynamic form, but also the requisite horizontal bracing. The great weight of this self-supporting structure serves to resist wind loads. With their different lengths and wall thicknesses, and slit in various ways, the pipes produce a range of musical tones when the wind blows.
