Even as early as the initial studies for the new canteen, the determining feature of this jointly used room was a wide-span roof. The basic polygonal shape suggests an examination of vari-ous structures and design modes which take nature as an example: the composition of leaves, sponges, honeycombs and various cell systems was analysed. The final result of these consid-erations was a steel and wood composite construction that combines the respective advantages of these two types – thereby allowing a significantly greater span compared with a purely wooden structure.
