This sewage works, Munich’s second-largest producer of renewable energy, demonstrates that industrial architecture and good design need be no contradiction. In the almost
50-metre-high prestressed concrete containers, organic substances are removed from the sewage sludge, and energy is generated from the resultant biogas. Thermal losses are minimized to achieve an ideal digestion temperature of 37 °C. The central staircase tower and the four 32-metre bridges serve as access routes and gas distribution runs. Despite the complications of obtaining building permission and the construction process, which covered a period of almost 10 years, it was possible to adhere to the cost parameters of € 63 million.
