Masterly Surfaces: David Chipperfield´s Neues Museum in Berlin
discussion p. 424 - 427Author Christian Schittich |
David Chipperfield’s recently completed refurbishment of the Neue Museum (New Museum) in Berlin is a consummate presentation of materials and material surfaces in their various stratifications – a flood of images and impressions, but also a unique experiment in the treatment of historic structures. Crumbling plaster, preserved remnants of paint and other traces of wear are endowed with an extraordinary aesthetic appeal.
