This 18th century craftsman’s residence is part of Munich’s listed “historic centre ensemble”. In the mid-1990s, however, it was subjected to a regrettable refurbishment: without a permit, the owner added a storey, removed old wooden beam ceilings, and reconfigured the facade (which was originally simple), with lively stucco forms and colours. In 2004 it changed hands, making a restoration possible. The stucco ornament and the wood veneer on the ground floor were removed. The architects developed a subtle play of tilted planes surrounding the windows, making reference to the neighbouring buildings. The wall surface’s texture was – as is typical of historic buildings here – extended to the ground.
