A former metalworking shop in dense fabric, flanked by narrow streets. The architects left the building’s structure intact, foresaw climatic refurbishment where necessary, and added a ventilated timber facade. The timber boarding was affixed with screws at a high level of precision; its varying widths enliven the dark facade. On street level, slightly reflective glazing replaces the original casement windows. With their oblique reveals and flush surfaces, the windows on the upper levels appear to follow their own logic. On the ground floor interior, the loft character was retained, while the bedrooms on the next level are newly unified, their load-bearing structure hidden. The kitchen and living areas make use of the attic space.
