The Approach to Existing Buildings – Six Positions

A few years ago the practice of separating old and new in renovation projects was normal – more often as a contrasting intrusion on restored structures offsetted by a very fine intersection and reserved arrangement. Since then the positions tend to vary, from the conservation of the patina at a specific point in time, like the New Museum in Berlin, to the attempt to reinstate the original conceptualised idea, or even completely experimental approaches. Six renowned architects who have dealt with this topic offer their opinion on dealing with existing structures.
