It is hard to think of another country in which the quality of concrete buildings has thrived so much and where concrete is so widely accepted than in Switzerland: the trend dates from the early steel concrete constructions around 1900, via the groundbreaking bridges of the 1920s from Robert Maillart, the housing development from Atielier 5 in the 1960s, the concrete churches from Walter Förderer from the 1970s and the subsequent prominence of the architectural regions Ticino, Basel and Grisons, all the way up to the present. Concrete architecture in Switzerland is a success story beyond compare. Concrete offers many possibilities, particularly for a modern sculpture and plasticity, as nine contemporary examples prove.
