Toyo Ito designed the main stadium for the World Games 2009 not as a closed arena but as a U-shaped structure. Open on the side facing the city and covered by a roof, it is continued in the form a public park in front of the stadium. At the same time, the snake-like scaled roof is the construction‘s most important symbolic element: 8844 photovoltaic modules with a total surface area of around 14 150 square metres – the largest such system integrated in a building in the country – generate up to 1000 kWh of electricity per hour. This amounts to around 1.1 MWh per year.
