Despite its centuries’-old tradition, timber as a building material is as up-to-date as ever. Found in all phases of construction, from the load-bearing structure to in-built fittings and furnishings, it lends itself to prefabrication and is economical in use. Furthermore, as one of the few regrowable materials used in building, it is eminently sustainable. For architects, timber is even more fascinating today than it was in the past. Reservations still exist on the part of clients, however, even though most people appreciate the warm qualities of wood in the interiors of buildings. Despite the evident advantages of the material, in central Europe, less than ten per cent of singlefamily housing today is built in timber. Content in Issue 5/2002
