Content of issue 3/2003 Konzept School Buildings

With some surprise, one registers that the new and radically modern secondary school by Henke and Schreieck in Vienna (see page 192) has gained the affection of its users. One is accustomed to quite different reactions from teachers and pupils.

And there lies the dilemma. Many of the school projects contained in this issue of DETAIL would be ideal vehicles for acquainting young people with modern forms of construction and helping them to develop a feeling for spatial effects, load-bearing behaviour, the character of different materials, and above all aesthetic values. No one can expect schoolchildren to explore these aspects of architecture without guidance, especially when they sense the dismissive attitude of their teachers. Outstanding school buildings could provide ideal educational material, but to communicate the ideas inherent to them one needs the right instruction.
