Open Diversity: Post am Rochus by Schenker Salvi Weber and feld72
The architecture competition announced in 2013 called not only for additional areas for services and commerce, but for the creation of around 1,000 jobs as well. The winning submission, a joint design by Schenker Salvi Weber and feld72 Architekten, promoted an overall urban composition that seeks to interact with its immediate surroundings.
The bustle on the Rochusmarkt continues into the shopping centre, creating a connection to Grete Jost Park, which lies just behind the mall. There are about 5,000 m² of retail space along both sides of the arcade. The mall was conceptualized as a three-storey, centrally lit, spacious gallery space. The uniformly designed displays are naturally lit by means of two large-format, oval skylights. Strips of artificial lighting and dark wooden handrails accentuate the balustrades of the oval galleries and skylights. Light-coloured terrazzo flooring and a curvy illuminated ceiling complete the elegant glass storefronts.
A two-storey foyer at the corner of Rasumofskygasse forms the entrance to the corporate headquarters. A light-flooded atrium that extends through all the storeys leads to the office spaces on the upper floors. This imposing gallery forms a clearly visible connection to the historically protected old building, serves as a distribution space and an informal communication space inside the building. Moreover, it provides access to an event room for 200 people on the seventh upper storey.
Flexibility and exchange were top priorities in the conceptualization of the working spaces. A desk-sharing system allows employees a great degree of freedom in arranging their own work environments. Along each façade, four to six adjustable-height tables form interconnected working islands: interspersed with bespoke furniture segments and meeting niches, the effect is one of clearly delimited spatial units. Glazed boxes enable one to four people to withdraw in order to concentrate on their work.
